Corporal John Robert Potts
LANCE CORPORAL 2455 ( 290500 ) JOHN ROBERT POTTS. 3RD MONMOUTHSHIRE REGIMENT.
John lived at 15 Castle Street, Tredegar, Working as an estate agent, He volunteered for active service and enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Mons [B Company], Landing in France on the 13 Febuary 1915. John was promoted up through the ranks in the 3rd Mons to Corporal, He survived the terrible horrors of the [ 2nd Ypres ] when the mettle of the regiment was tried, And found not wanting. The regiment suffered severely with horrendous casualties, Many brave boys form the locality fell in that ever memorable battle in France.
John was selected by his superiors as a possible officer candidate and he accepts this appointment, Subsequently he is discharged to commission from the 3rd Mons on the 29 August 1915, And attends officer cadet school . On completing the required training, John is posted to the Northumberland Fusiliers as a Lieutenant. [ SEE MEDAL INDEX CARD]
John survives the war, He is demobilised from the army and returns to Tredegar to take up his former employment, Records for St George’s Masonic Lodge at Tredegar, Shows john to be still living at 15 Castle Street, Tredegar in 1920.
